Friend of Distinction
FOUA's first Friend of Distinction award was presented April 5, 2007, to Cliff Contreras, Director of Transportation Services (TAPS) at UC Davis. The award is in recognition of Cliff's dedication to improving the facilities at the airport. Cliff has also implemented improved security measures while maintaining accessibility to both users and the general public. The award was made by Robert Caulk, FOUA president.

ICAO
The 0O5 (zero oscar five) ICAO airport identifier was replaced with KEDU on November 23, 2006. The EDU ties in with University Airport's owner, UC Davis, is less confusing, and avoids confusion with nearby Chester (O05) and Shelter Cove (0Q5).

Bird Nests

Watch out for bird nests! Over the last few years some of us have had to clean out nests from airplanes under the shade hangars.

Crime Reports

We've received reports of incidents at University Airport and others. For instance, this emailer posted:

When I started to take the cover off [my airplane] I noticed it was unbuckled. All told I found about 5 things that were definitely not how I left them, both inside the plane and out. Nothing was missing. The prop had been repositioned, the gust lock removed, the canopy lock was unlocked, and the canopy ajar. I walked into the Cal Aggie Flying Farmers office and told the fellow working today that I thought my plane had been handled and/or entered, and he told me that there were other reports of a similar nature. He said that no one had found anything missing or damaged, and that the suspicion was that some folks were just out looking at the planes, to see what was inside, etc. Apparently even their fleet may have been "looked at", and they checked them out for missing equipment and/or damage, and didn't find any. He also told me that if anything was broken or missing he would call the police and file a report. I didn't find anything missing, and flew my plane home.

Another poster said:

This same problem is occurring at Lincoln airport. People are breaking into hangars stealing the gas out of planes.

Let's keep an eye on things! If you notice suspicious people or activity call the UCD police: 530-752-1230

Runup Area Enlargement

In response to the request by FOUA, the aprons for each end of the runway were enlarged in April 2004. This is an important improvement and we are greatful for TAPS' responsiveness and the work that Bill Hartman did in laying out the improvements.

Shade Hangar Lighting

In March 2004 TAPS approved the expenditure of up to $1000 for the installation of the shade hangar lights by FOUA. The work took place May 15 2004 by volunteers from FOUA.

Flag Pole Project

TAPS was supportive of our Flag Pole Project (FPP) for an Eagle Scout project and contributed some of the funds to help out. This project placed a lighted flagpole near the CAFF building for displaying the US and California flags.

Lower Fuel Prices for University Airport

At the request of Friends of University Airport, Cliff Contreras of UCD Transportation & Parking Services has agreed to design a test program to reduce fuel prices to competitive levels. The idea is to trade higher prices for lower ones but substantially greater volume. This means that all of us at University Airport will be able to purchase our fuel at our home field for prices similar to Yolo, Nut Tree, etc.

Free Airplane Flights for Kids: The EAA Young Eagles Program

For several years, the Experimental Aircraft Association has organized a program to connect pilots with young people who are interested in aviation. Children 8 to 17 years of age can have a free airplane ride, donated by the volunteer pilots of the EAA, through the Young Eagles program. Contact Ralph Finch for more information.

THE CLOCK IS WOUND BUT ONCE

In a hangar at the airport
Where a brooding pilot blinks,
Deeply graven is the message--
It is later than you think.

The clock of life is wound but once,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.

Now is the time you own;
The past's a golden link.
Go flying now, my brother--
It's later than you think.
